Dead gars, probably thrown away as trash fish, August 2010, Creve Coeur Lake, Missouri

Gars are fascinating, prehistoric-looking fish armored with bony plates just under their skin. They are full of small bones and not very convenient for humans to eat -- hence they are regarded as trash fish. Still, it is sad to see them thrown on shore to die like this instead of being released.
