Immense Mauna Kea, the greatest of the Hawaiian volcanoes, at sunset

Previous Image | Back to Gallery | Next Image

Viewed from the slopes of its neighbor Maunaloa, the gigantic shield volcano Maunakea rests serene under a sunset sky. A crown of clouds encircles the summit, which just barely protrudes into clear air above them. The cluster of world-class telescopes that have been built there are dwarfed to specks by the volcano's immensity, and despite the bitter controversy about them can hardly be seen.
